Data-Driven Decision-Making for School Leaders

A spreadsheet can tell you what happened. It cannot tell you what to do. Leadership begins when you connect data to a decision.

Data is only useful when it changes a decision. If it does not change a decision, it becomes noise.

Three (Effective) Decisions Leaders Make Every Week

  1. Where to focus: What matters most right now.

  2. What to adjust: Which practice, process, or support needs change.

  3. How to resource: Time, people, and money.

a Simple Test For Any Data Point

Ask:

  • What decision will this inform?

  • Who needs to act on it?

  • How often will we review it?

  • What would “good” look like?

If you cannot answer these, do not track it.

lLeadership Reflection

Write two sentences:

  • One decision you currently make on instinct.

  • One piece of evidence that would improve that decision.
